Help for a Healthy Mouth

Posted on 8 November 2019 by Lorraine Barrett
  • Try to only have sugar free foods and drinks when you have a snack and try to only have two snacks a day
  • If you must have sugary foods and drink then try to have them with meals to reduce the number of ‘sugar attacks’ on your teeth throughout the day.
  • Help to fight tooth decay with a drink of water or milk after every meal or snack to neutralise acids in your mouth.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum can help produce saliva which can wash away acids in your mouth.
  • To protect the enamel on your teeth, wait for one hour after eating or drinking before brushing your teeth.
  • Brush teeth for two minutes, the last thing at night and one other time during the day.
  • Use a toothpaste with fluoride (1000ppm for children under 3 years and 1350-1500ppm fluoride for 3+)
  • Spit out the toothpaste and don’t rinse your mouth. Let the fluoride stay on your teeth and keep working.
  • Your dentist can help you keep your mouth healthy, often spotting things before they go wrong. Visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. Ask them when they would like to see you next
