Mouth Cancer Action Month

Mouth cancer action month is a charity campaign organised by the Oral Health Foundation. The campaign raises awareness of mouth cancer. By spotting mouth cancer early, there is a better chance of beating it.

Be Mouth Aware

Signs and symptoms of mouth cancer include:

  • Mouth Ulcers that don’t heal
  • White or red patches in the mouth
  • Persistent sore throat
  • Bad breath
  • Pain or difficulty swallowing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Lumps in the mouth, head or neck
  • Speech problems

Incidences of mouth cancer

  • 10,825 people in the UK are diagnosed with mouth cancer a year
  • Equates to one person in the UK diagnosed with mouth cancer every hour
  • Mouth cancer is the 10th most common cancer in the UK
  • 81% of mouth cancers are diagnosed in those over the age of 55

Mouth cancer risk factors

  • Smoking
  • Smokeless tobacco
  • Alcohol
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Environmental tobacco smoke
  • Infections
  • Family history
